Enrichment of the Analytical Visualization Tool: Creation of Additional Urban Spatial Analysis Units

The research “Enrichment of the Analytical Visualization Tool: Creation of Additional Urban Spatial Analysis Units” is a continuation of the study implemented in the period 2017-2020 and its aim is to update and further develop a modern tool for recording and analyzing areas and social groups that face greater challenges due to poverty or social exclusion. Through the collection and processing of modern data, a comprehensive geographical information base is created that allows the identification of areas with increased needs and a better understanding of social inequalities in Crete.

The initial research had led to the creation of tools for measuring and mapping deprivation, through the Total Multiple Deprivation Index (TMD), as well as individual indicators related to income, employment, education, housing and access to care services. This research enriches the geographical base with updated data from the ELSTAT census, as well as from administrative and statistical sources. At the same time, it renews the visualization tool, the Level of Analytical Visualization Units of Crete (MAAK), which the team had created in 2020, by adding new spatial analysis units, especially in the urban areas of Rethymno, Heraklion and Chania.

Through the new geographical base and analysis tools, it is possible to map poverty and social deprivation in more detail, as well as to monitor the changes that have occurred in recent years. The results can be used by the Region of Crete and the Municipalities to design and implement more effective social inclusion policies.

Overall, the research constitutes an important documentation tool for understanding social needs in Crete and contributes to the formulation of policies that better respond to the real conditions and challenges of each region.
