Vasilis Arapoglou is a professor in the Department of Social Policy at Panteion University of Political and Social Studies, specializing in comparative social policy and social inequalities. He graduated in Economics (Athens University of Economics), completed his postgraduate studies in urban and regional development (Panteio University) and European social policy (MSc. LSE), and his doctoral thesis at the department of Geography and the Environments at the London School of Economics and Political Science (PhD LSE). He served from 2006 to 2024 at the Department of Sociology of the University of Crete. He has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of the Aegean, the National Technical University of Athens, Panteion University, Harokopio and the University of Thessaly. Since 2003 he has been a tutor at the Hellenic Open University. His research interests focus on social inequalities and forms of social and housing exclusion, the segregation of migrants in urban centers, the concentration of poverty and multiple deprivation, urban and housing social inclusion policies in Europe and the USA.
He has long-term experience in administration, planning and evaluation of research projects and policies in Greece and internationally. He has served as: visiting researcher at the European Institute Hellenic Observatory LSE (2019-2015), OpenSpace Research Centre of the Open University in the UK (2012), associate at INE-GSEE, the National Centre for Social Research, the Institute of Migration Policy, the Institute of Urban Environment and Human Resources of Panteion University, and the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research. He has been member of the editorial and advisory board of international and Greek journals (European Urban and Regional Studies, 2013-2024, Sage Open 2013-2016, Social Atlas of Athens 2015-2024). Member of the Sectoral Council of Social Sciences (2018-2020), EU HORIZON 2020 SC6 Programme Committee (National Representative 2017-2018) European Science Foundation- College of Experts (2016-2024), member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Research and Studies of the University of Crete- KEME (2016-2021), member of the University of Crete Committee on the Role of Social Sciences and Humanities (2021), coordinator of the committee on sustainability and representative of the University of Crete in the Network of Greek Universities for Sustainability (2021).
