Ioannis Zaimakis

Ioannis Zaimakis is a Professor in the field of "Sociology of Local Communities and Culture" at the Department of Sociology of the University of Crete.

He is a graduate of the Departments of Sociology (Panteion University) and Social Work (TEI of Heraklion). He holds a Master's degree in "Open and Distance Education" from the Hellenic Open University and a PhD from the Department of Psychology (Panteion University) entitled "Urban space and cultural differentiation: the social world of "Lakko" area and the poetry of cunning (μαγκιά)". He has taught at the Departments of Sociology (University of Crete), Social Administration (Democritus University of Thrace), Social Work (TEI of Crete) and the Hellenic Open University. He has also taught in postgraduate programs, Sociology (University of Crete), Sports Studies: Sociology, History Anthropology (EAP), Social Work (TEI of Athens). He has been President of the Department of Sociology since 2016. He is the Director of the Laboratory of Social Analysis and Applied Social Research of the University of Crete since 2015 (http://sociology.soc.uoc.gr/ekaeke/). He has also been  Vice President of the Department and member of a number of committees of the Department of Sociology (University of Crete).

He has participated as a scientific responsible or investigator in a series of research projects on issues of local communities, social deviation, vulnerable social groups and popular culture. His publications concern studies in the fields of local communities and local development, multiculturalism and popular culture, social protection of vulnerable groups, social history of sports (Books: Akmazonta Origins: Deviation and Cultural Creation in Lakko Heraklion, 1900-1940 ∙ Community Labor and Local Communities: Development Collective Action, Multiculturalism, Plethron ∙ Local space and multiculturalism: Sapes-Thrace (co-authored with Th.
