Who we are

The Team of the University of Crete consists mainly of researchers, faculty members and special scientific staff of the University of Crete and in particular of the Department of Sociology and the Laboratory of Social Analysis and Applied Social Research (EKAEKE) in collaboration with distinguished academics from Panteion University, the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Harokopio University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The coordination of the Team and the work it has to perform has been undertaken by the Laboratory of Social Analysis and Applied Social Research (EKAEKE) of the Department of Sociology of the University of Crete. The Laboratory was founded in 2000 and is now directed by the Professor of the Department of Sociology, Giannis Zaimakis. EKAEKE implements research and educational activities, with emphasis on the one hand on the conduction of research and study of contemporary social problems and phenomena and on the other hand on the development of scientific dialogue through the implementation of Conferences and Summer Schools. It aims also to cover research, educational needs in the field of social analysis and applied social research. The collaboration with the Laboratory allows the participation of experts in quantitative and qualitative research but also the development of information systems and new technologies as well as the involvement of groups of students in internships and laboratory courses.

The research activity undertaken by the Team of the University of Crete is organized into 3 main Research Axes and developed within a three years period (2025-2028):

• 1st Research Axis: “Income & Living Conditions of Households in Crete”
• 2nd Research Axis: “Updating and enriching the geographical database for identifying pockets of deprivation and poverty in the Region of Crete”
• 3rd Research Axis: “Pockets of Deprivation, Social Protection and Social Inclusion Networks”.
